Sattu Drink | Sattu Ka Namkeen Sharbat
Sattu drink or sattu ka namkeen sharbat is a very popular traditional summer drink, originated in Bihar. Sattu sharbat is prepared with roasted gram flour, lemon, and a few more spices.
It has its own variations as per state like Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. Sattu is a roasted chana (gram) flour or roasted barley or mixture of both.

You can also try some other summer drinks Shikanji, strawberry milkshake, Punjabi lassi, Masala Chaas, Strawberry Lassi & Mango lassi.
What is Sattu
Sattu is a roasted chana dal powder which has carbs, fats, protein & fiber. It is also rich in iron and being fiber-rich food it helps in fighting constipation.
It is a good source of protein but at the same time, it comes with carbohydrates. You need to be mindful if you take it to complete your protein macro.
Sattu sharbat is a very popular drink in UP & Bihar. It can be made sweet or savory, both ways.
You can make a variety of sattu dishes too, like, sattu paratha, sattu kachori, sattu laddu, and litti.

How to make sattu at home
Making sattu at home is very easy. You need roasted chana dal or roasted black chickpeas. You can choose either with skin or without skin or a combination of both.
Ingredients
1 Cup chana dal (black chickpea)
Method
First dry roast the chana dal or black chickpea on medium heat. It takes around 7-8 minutes to roast on medium heat.
Keep stirring to avoid burning. let them cool down completely.
Grind them to a fine powder. You can use this powder as is or if required you can sieve it. Homemade sattu powder is ready to make sattu recipes.

- Sattu– Sattu is the star ingredient of this recipe.
- Spices– Roasted cumin seed powder, and black salt gives a nice flavor to this sharbat.
- Herbs & green chili– Mint leaves make it very refreshing. Green chili gives spiciness to this drink and balances out all the salted & tangy flavors.
- Lemon juice– Tangy flavor comes from lemon juice.
- Other ingredients– Ice cubes for serving & chilled water
How to make sattu sharbat
Step-1 Add all ingredients in the bowl
All all ingredients in a vessel.
Step-2 Mix well
Mix all ingredients together in a vessel. Adjust salt and lemon as per your taste.
Step-3 Serve chilled
Pour in glasses, add ice cubes, garnish with lemon wedges and mint leaves. Serve chilled.

You can have this sattu ka sharbat any time during the day.
Storing suggestions
Homemade Sattu sharbat takes only 5-10 minutes to make. You can make and store it for 1-2 days. If you want to store it for longer duration then just skip adding mint and lemon juice.
Just add them before serving. They turned bitter if keeping for longer time.

- Adding chilies is completely optional.
- Sattu grains tend to sit at the bottom keep stir it occasionally before sipping.
- Adjust salt and lemon juice as per your taste.
- You can add chopped onion too as garnishing.
- If you want a bit of spicy then add chopped chilies otherwise eliminate it completely.
Sattu & besan both are not the same. Sattu is a flour of roasted gram or roasted black chickpeas with other cereals and has a coarse texture.
Besan is a raw gram flour and has a fine texture.
Sattu has a good amount of protein but it is not a complete protein profile. Carbohydrate is high in 100 gram of Bihari sattu. During weight loss one has to maintain calories intake.
Consuming sattu during weight loss can affect your diet. So if you are consuming sattu drink while on diet, make sure to adjust carbs macro accordingly.
To make the sweet sharbat , you need some powdered jaggery and chilled water. Mix the jaggery powder and the sattu together with chilled water, and then blend together till it forms a smooth consistency.
Some like to strain the drink as it has a grainy texture which tends to settle down at the bottom if sits for some time. Keep stirring and drink.
