Spring onion is harvested before letting them further grow the onion bulbs. They are low in calories and carbohydrates but a rich source of vitamins like Vit K, C, minerals, and phytochemicals.

Scallion or green onions can also be used in place of spring onion. Basically, spring onion contains a white bulge at the bottom, whereas the other two do not show such a thing.

Most of the time, spring onions are used in Indo Chinese food but you can cook it with carrots, potatoes, or make this paratha. Do check carrot with spring onion sabji.

spring onions taste amazing in fritters, soups, and to a similar dish named Scallion pancakes.

    Why you will love this

Spring onion paratha is an unleavened Indian flatbread prepared by mixing all ingredients in whole wheat flour. They are easy to make and healthy breakfast for busy mornings.

It is best with curd but you can serve with pickle and raita as well.  We also call them hara pyaz ka paratha.

I used a food processor to grate spring onion in small pieces. Small pieces help in elevating the actual flavor of spring onion. Since salt is added in the dough, onion leaves water content which is sufficient to knead the dough.

This vegetable paratha is a vegan, healthy, easy to make, quick and healthy breakfast recipe

    Ingredients

Please check RECIPE CARD for detailed ingredients list with accurate measurement.

    • Spring onion- You can chop them finely or just use a food processor to make small pieces.
    • Wheat flour- I am using wheat flour to make these parathas. You can also use any millet flour.
    • Spices- Garam masala or kitchen king, red chili powder, cumin seed powder, coriander powder
    • Green chili (optional, I used nonspicy one)
    • Salt as per taste
    • Oil for cooking

You can adjust chilies as per taste. Indian Parathas taste great with spices.

How to make spring onion paratha

It is such a flavorful paratha recipe to make with just a few ingredients. Let see how to make spring onion paratha at home, step by step.

IMPORTANT I did not use water as spring onion released enough water after adding salt and because it was chopped by food processor. If you are chopping by hand then you may need water to knead.

    1. First of all, clean and wash spring onion nicely. Dry it with a paper towel to remove excess water.
    2. Chop in the food processor (or with a knife) into fine pieces.
    3. In a mixing bowl gather all ingredients and combine them nicely. Adjust salt as per taste.
    4. As soon as mixing everything is done onion will start releasing water which is good enough for making the dough.
    5. Make a soft dough and prepare for rolling parathas.
    6. Heat a griddle on medium flame.
    7. Divide the dough into equal parts. 8 parathas you can make with this quantity.
    8. Roll out a portion in 6″ circle and place it on the heated griddle.Hara pyaz ka paratha or spring onion paratha is another Indian flatbread recipe where vegetables and spices kneaded along with the whole wheat flour. Such parathas are easy to make, very quick process when compare to stuff parathas, and the best part is kids love these. Another breakfast option which is suitable for a kid's lunchbox too.
    9. Cook on both sides by applying oil. Cook until golden brown.
    10. Repeat the process with other dough balls and make parathas.
    11. Serve hot this spring onion paratha with any of your favorite homemade curd, pickle, tea, and enjoy.

    Serving suggestions

Serve this spring onion paratha with raita like boondi raita, potato raita, lauki raita or cucumber tomato raita. It also goes well with pickle and masala chai in breakfast or during snack time.

All Indian vegetable paratha pair with yogurt or curd. You can check this homemade yogurt recipe.

Enjoy mango lassi, sweet lassi, or masala chaas with this paratha. Strawberry lassi also can be a great pair to go with it.

    Storing & Reheating

Store parathas in any container, just make sure to keep a paper towel at the bottom. It will absorb all the moisture and paratha will not be soggy.

You can store it in insulated container as well.

When required, microwave for 30 sec to 1 min or use griddle to reheat these parathas.

    Tips & FAQ's

    1. Do not let sit the dough for some time. spring onion leaves a lot of water content, which makes it difficult to handle.
    2. If at all it happens then add some dry flour and knead again.
What goes well with this paratha?

Greek yogurt, homemade plain curd, pickle, masala chaas, sweet lassi, mango lassi, strawberry lassi, boondi raita, lauki raita, and potato raita are some of the side dishes.

Initially even I had thought to make this paratha, but couldn't get spring onion that day. Addition of kitchen king must have made it taste so unique.

Love the colour of the parathas, makes it look so delicious. I sometimes add any left over spring onion to theplas. Just love the slightly sweetish pungent taste of spring onion.
