Moong dal tikki with chole

When we stayed in US, we missed street food very much. Being new in cooking, I was always stepping back to cook street food, I mean normal cooking itself is a big task how can I think of chat items… But once we both tried our hands on making chat at home. And it was awesome. Did not follow any recipe simply trial n error, check it out.

Ingredients: Sufficient for three
people
For Tikki/Pancake
1 Cup moong
dal/ yellow lentil dal
1 Medium
sized onion finely chopped
1 Tsp
ginger paste
2-3 Green
chilies chopped finely
1 Medium
sized tomato cut into small cubes, seeds should be removed
2 Tblsp
green coriander leaves chopped finely
A pinch of
asafoetida
2-3 Slices
of wheat/white bread
Salt as per
taste
Chat masala
as per taste
For Chole
1 Cup dry
green peas
1/4 Tsp
baking soda
2 Big
tomato chopped finely
1 Tsp
ginger-garlic paste
1 Tsp chole
masala
1/4 Tsp
garam masala
1 Tsp cumin
seeds
1/2 Tsp red
chili powder
1/2 Tsp
turmeric powder
Salt as per
taste
2-3 Tblsp
green coriander leaves finely chopped
Method: Wash and soak the lentil for half and hour.
Pressure cook it until one whistle comes. Moong dal does not take much time to
cook, so one whistle is sufficient. Keep this aside for sometime. Now heat oil
in a pan and add asafoetida and chopped onion. Just cook for 2 min and pour
this in a mixing bowl. Now add ginger paste, green chilies, chopped tomatos,
chopped coriander, chat masala, salt and bread slices after crushing them. Mix
this well so that chat masala and salt become even. To this add boiled lentil
and mix well. Make small small tikkis with this mixture and roast on the hot
griddle until both the sides are brown.
Soak dry
green peas for 6-8 hours. Pressure cook this with addition of baking soda and 1
tsp salt. Pressure cook this untill 5-6 whistle comes. Now heat oil in a pan
and add cumin seeds & onion. Cook this untill onion becomes golden in
color. To this add ginger-garlic paste and chopped tomatos. Cook them untill
tomatos starts leaving oil in the corner of the pan. After this add turmeric
powder, red chili powder, chole masala and garam masala. Garnish this with
chopped coriander leaves and now chole curry is ready to serve :).

Serve this
with tikkis and have it together…. yuuuuuuuuuuummmy :).

  1. Its difficult for me too to get authentic Indian Street food here in Mombasa. As a result we have to make it at home. Your chole tikki looks so delicious. I’ve never tried making tikki with moong dal.

  2. Bhawana, Fabulous recipe, so healthy, filled with protein and so delicious too. I feel like having this tikki Choley , right now. And I agree that in US we miss street food so much, but because of that, we learn to cook ourselves.
