Pyaj ka raita is a true taste enhancer when it comes to rice recipes or any kind of stuffed parathas.

It is one of the variations of onion tomato raita. Both of these are served with biryani or pulao in all Indian restaurants commonly.

This pyaj ka raita served with biryani most of the time in India. Using ingredients like curd/yogurt, onion, coriander leaves, and green chilies onion raita get ready quickly.

Pyaaj raita is one of the easiest raita to make with pantry staples in just a few minutes.

  • Yogurt– Normal homemade plain curd is used to make raita. I am using greek yogurt in this recipe and added water in order to make a thin consistency. If you are using curd and it sour than add milk in place of water. see homemade yogurt.
  • Onion– You can either use chopped onions or sliced onions. I am using thinly sliced RED onion in this recipe. NOTE- If onion has strong-flavored then soak in cold water for 10 minutes. Squeeze and then add in yogurt.
  • Spices– Chopped green chilies as per taste, roasted cumin powder, salt & black salt (optional)
  • Others– Water or milk, coriander leaves or mint leaves for garnishing

How to make onion Raita for biryani

Learn how to make this budget-friendly onion raita with few pantry basic ingredients in just 5 minutes, step by step.

Step-1 Whisk the yogurt

The first step is to whisk the yogurt to make it creamy and smooth. Since I am using greek yogurt to make this raita recipe, I added water to make it thin.

If you use homemade curd and it is sour then use milk instead of water. It will thin down and also sweeten the curd.

Step-2 Adding all ingredients

Add chopped chiles, roasted cumin powder, thinly sliced onion & salt to the whisked yogurt.

Step-3 Mix everything

Mix nicely. If you like a thinner consistency, feel free to add another 1/4 cup of water at this stage.

Step-4 Adjust salt & serve

Mix properly and adjust the salt as per taste. NOTE- You can use black salt as well. Garnish with coriander or mint leaves. Chilled for 30 minutes in the fridge before serving.

Serving suggestions

Homemade onion raita tastes BEST with vegetable biryani, vegetable pulao, and simple khichdi like moong dal khichdi.

You can serve this along with parathas like aloo paratha, zucchini paratha.

Storing suggestions

  • Room temperature– Onion raita at room temperature is best to consume fresh. But still, 2-3 hours are good to keep at the kitchen counter.
  • Refrigerator– It is best to serve fresh. But you can always mix all the ingredients except onion and store in the fridge for 3-4 days.
  • Freezer– I do not recommend freezing onion raita. Frozen raita split a bit after thawing. But if required you can freeze and later add some curd and whisk again.

You can use pumpkin, carrot, cucumber, bhindi (okra), lauki (bottle gourd), and tomato as well to make a variety of raita recipes.

  1. Always use fresh curd or greek yogurt to make a raita recipe. In case you find curd sour add milk and little sugar to make it normal.
  2. Onion has a very strong flavor and smell. You can soak them in cold water for 10 minutes. It helps in reducing the smell and strong taste.
  3. Serve freshly prepared raita. Onion turns bitter if keeping long in the yogurt/curd and lose the taste.
Can we eat onion with buttermilk?

You can consume onions with buttermilk as well. We add onion in salads as well and serve with other meal items. It is alright eating with buttermilk or yogurt.

How do you cut onions for raita?

You can slice, or chop onion. I used thinly sliced onion in this raita recipe. However, feel free to add finely chopped onion as well.
