How to make onion Raita for biryani
Learn how to make this budget-friendly onion raita with few pantry basic ingredients in just 5 minutes, step by step.
Step-1 Whisk the yogurt
The first step is to whisk the yogurt to make it creamy and smooth. Since I am using greek yogurt to make this raita recipe, I added water to make it thin.
If you use homemade curd and it is sour then use milk instead of water. It will thin down and also sweeten the curd.
Step-2 Adding all ingredients
Add chopped chiles, roasted cumin powder, thinly sliced onion & salt to the whisked yogurt.
Step-3 Mix everything
Mix nicely. If you like a thinner consistency, feel free to add another ¼ cup of water at this stage.
Step-4 Adjust salt & serve
Mix properly and adjust the salt as per taste. NOTE- You can use black salt as well. Garnish with coriander or mint leaves. Chilled for 30 minutes in the fridge before serving.

Storing suggestions
- Room temperature- Onion raita at room temperature is best to consume fresh. But still, 2-3 hours are good to keep at the kitchen counter.
- Refrigerator- It is best to serve fresh. But you can always mix all the ingredients except onion and store in the fridge for 3-4 days.
- Freezer- I do not recommend freezing onion raita. Frozen raita split a bit after thawing. But if required you can freeze and later add some curd and whisk again.
Variations
You can use pumpkin, carrot, cucumber, bhindi (okra), lauki (bottle gourd), and tomato as well to make a variety of raita recipes.
