Benefit of Oats
Oats are considered to be the healthiest grain these days. This is gluten-free and a great source of many minerals, antioxidants, vitamins and rich in fiber. Oats groats are the most intact and whole form of oats which takes a longer time to cook. Due to this reason, it is preferred as rolled, crushed or steel cut oats form. This is commonly used in breakfast as overnight soaked oats recipes. But can also be used in baking cookies, muffins, cakes, flatbreads and much more.
Though sometimes oats are grown in the same field as wheat or barley. There are some chances that these crops contaminate oats with gluten. So while consuming oats, it is a caution for those who are gluten intolerance. Read more about Oats at 9 Health Benefits of Eating Oats and Oatmeal.

Oats flaxseeds mathri
These mathris are prepared using whole wheat flour, oats flour and flaxseeds flour. Rest of the process is similar to the traditional way of making mathris.
Since the time I started my weight loss journey, I always look for healthy eating options. The good part is if your family too becomes a part of it, it feels so great and easy to deal with. My father always made sure we are not eating refined flour stuff, he cooked all savory snacks with whole wheat flour. Yes, you read it right :). My father used to make snacks for us. I continued this tradition and make my cakes and snacks with whole wheat flour.

Last 6-7 months I am trying my hands on finger millet flour and oats flour. These mathri I made with oats flour, which is healthy, fibrous and protein rich. Do check it now how I made healthy oats and flaxseeds mathri.
Oats Flaxseeds Mathri
Ingredients Make 24-30 Pieces
1.5 Cup whole wheat flour
1.5 Cup oats flour
2 Tblsp flex seeds
2 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper powder
1.5 teaspoon ajwain/carom seeds
1 Tblsp kasoori methi or handful fresh fenugreek leaves
4 Tblsp oil for kneading
1 Cup +2-3 Tblsp water to make a dough
Black pepper seeds to add on top of mathri
Oil to deep fry
Method
- I used rolled oats to make these. Grind them to make smooth powder and then use it. Grind flax seeds too beforehand.
- In a mixing bowl mix all the ingredients well. Use water to make a dough. It should not be soft, consistency should be like poori/puri dough.
- Now using this dough make small 1.5" size small balls. This much dough will yield to 30 mathris around. Take 1-2 black pepper seed on the flat surface, crush it with rolling pin and now place one small ball on top of it. Roll it over to make a 2" 2.5" diameter circle. With the help of fork put holes in both sides. Poking holes prevent them puffing up while deep frying.
- Do the same procedure with the rest of the balls.
- Heat oil in a kadhai/pan and put these rolled circles into it. Keep turning them to avoid burning. The flame should be between high and medium, change it from time to time. Fry till they get a golden color.
Oats flaxseeds mathris are ready to serve. Let them cool completely and store in airtight jar. It is my teatime snack, I love to have it with green tea. With mix pickle, it tastes heavenly.
Note
- Before storing make sure that they are completely cool down. Else they will become soggy.
- Flex seeds are optional if not available. But it is very good in nutritional value.
- You can bake oats flax seeds mathri too. WIll post that method soon.
