Mango is also known as "king of fruits" is used in various ways as soon as it hits the market. From making mango pickle, aam Panna, raw mango raita, mango chutney with raw mango you can go on to prepare mango lassi, mango shake, strawberry mango salsa, Mango salsa, Semolina mango cake and so much more with ripe mango.

    What is raita

In general, raita is a mixture of whisked yogurt (curd) and fruit or vegetable along with basic spices such as roasted cumin seed powder, salt, red chili powder, black salt.

Garnishing with green coriander or mint leaves. raita is named after the main ingredients in it.

Please check RECIPE CARD for detailed ingredients list with accurate measurement.

    • Mango- Use fresh ripe mangoes to mango raita. The sweetness of mango enhances the flavors. Adding mango puree also adds flavors.
    • Curd/yogurt- Using plain homemade curd or store-bought is good to make raita. It should not be sour in taste. I am using greek yogurt to make this raita.
    • Spices- Roasted cumin powder adds really nice aroma, black salt & salt as per taste.
    • Sugar- You can use any sweetener like sugar, stevia, maple syrup & sugar powder.
    • Garnishing- Few chopped mango pieces, chopped mint leaves

How to make ripe mango raita

Recipe of mango raita with step by step instructions.

    1. In a mixing bowl add thick yogurt and water. Whisked together until yogurt looks smooth and creamy. If you prefer to add puree too, add in this step.
    2. Peel the mangoes and chop it in small cubes.
    3. Add these chopped mango pieces in the yogurt.Preparation of mango raita. Whisk curd in bowl, add water, add chopped mango, and add cumin powder.
    4. To this add roasted cumin seed powder, black salt, and adjust salt as per taste. Combine well. Adjust sugar level by tasting the mixture.add black salt, sugar, salt and combine everything in the bowl.
    5. Garnish with chopped mint leaves and chopped mango. Refrigerate for 30 minutes and serve. I had this mango mint raita with mint pulao.

Some household adds a litter tempering which also tastes great. For Tadka (tempering)- Heat a tadka pan and add oil. When the oil is hot enough add mustard seeds. Once they start crackling add curry leaves, and dry red chilies. Pour it over the mango raita and serve immediately.

    Serving suggestions

Enjoy raitas with biryani or stuffed parathas like pudina paratha or mint paratha, gobhi paratha, aloo paratha, or plain parathas like ajwain paratha or zucchini paratha.

You can check all paratha recipes here which will go well with these raita recipes.

Serve it along with any spicy meals to balance the heat. Pulao, biryani & parathas are some meals to go with this.

In north Indian style, raita recipes do not involve any tadka. In South India, a tadka with oil, curry leaves, mustard seeds, and dry red chilis is often used. Tadka is a must in raita for South Indian Style cooking. And it is also called as Pachadi.

    Storing suggestions

You can make mango raita ahead of time and store in the fridge for 2 days easily. Just do not add mint leaves.

Tips to make best mango raita recipe

    1. If you enjoy flavored yogurt like mango lassi then add mango puree while whisking yogurt, it amplifies the mango flavor in this raita.
    2. Use fresh and thick curd (yogurt). It should not be sour. If the curd is sour then add milk in place of water.
    3. You can use pomegranate seeds too for garnishing.
    4. Use fresh seasonal nonfibrous mangoes.
What mangoes are best to make mango raita?

Use any variety of ripe non-fibrous mango to make this raita. Alphonso, or Kesar are good choice. In the US, buy Ataulfo, Kent, or Keitt.

Can we use frozen mangoes to make raita?

Actually no, this raita tastes great with fresh ripe mangoes. In frozen mangoes, there are some raw mango pieces as well which makes it tasteless.
