I still remember when I used to boil eggs on the stovetop in a deep pan. It was so difficult to predict how long to boil them.
Sometimes it was undercooked and at times it used to be overcooked (grey in color).
Then peeling was so difficult and I always end up wasting a lot of portion of boiled eggs.
What is 5-5-5 method
Boiling eggs in the instant pot is super easy now. Let see how you can get perfect hard-boiled eggs every time using a 5-5-5 formula.
When I first learned a 5-5-5 formula to make instant pot hard boiled eggs, I could not believe how easy it could be.
Using a 5-5-5 method you will get perfectly cooked yolk.
- First 5- pressure cook the eggs on HIGH pressure for the first 5 minutes.
- Second 5- Allow the NATURAL PRESSURE RELEASE for the second 5 minutes. And then manually release the rest of the pressure.
- Third 5- Let the boil eggs sit in ice water or normal cold water for the last 5 minutes before peeling them
This whole 15 minutes process results in perfectly boiled eggs which are easy to peel and perfectly cooked yolk from inside with perfect colored yolk.

- Eggs- You can boil 10 eggs at a time in an instant pot insert at a time.
- Water- 1 cup water is required to fill in the instant pot bottom.
- Ice bath- Ice bath stops the further cooking in boiled eggs. Be ready with a bowl of water and ice cubes.
- Trivet- Using steamer basket and stackable egg steam rack allows to boiled more than 6 eggs at one time.
How to boil eggs in Instant Pot
You can use trivet which comes with an instant pot. If you have a steamer basket or stackable egg steam rack.
Here is the step by step process to hard boil eggs in instant pot.
Step-1 Preparation of ingredients- First of all, add water in the instant pot insert and place the trivet. Carefully place the eggs on top of the trivet.
Step-2 Pressure Cook- Close the lid and set the vent to the SEALING position. Press PRESSURE COOK and set the timer for 5 minutes on HIGH pressure.
Step-3 After the cooking is done, wait for 5 minutes and then manually release the rest of the pressure.
Step-4 Icebath- Transfer the boil eggs in ice bath water and keep it for the next 5 minutes.
Peel the eggs & serve- After 5 minutes peel the eggs and serve immediately. Instant pot hard boiled eggs are ready to enjoy.

4-4-4 formula will give you a soft yolk and even cooking for less time like 3-3-3 will result in a creamier version.

You can keep these hard boiled eggs in an airtight container in the fridge or freezer.
- Room temperature- It is always best to consume boiled eggs within the first 3-4 hours.

- Freezer- It is not recommended to freeze hard boiled eggs. The white part of the eggs becomes rubbery & chewy after the thaw. Though you can separate the yolk and can freeze it.

There are a few points that are great to follow if you want perfect boiled eggs.
- Always keep boil eggs in cold water for 5 minutes after pressure cooking. It helps in peeling.
- Boil eggs are always easy to peel just after an ice bath. It is better to peel and then store. Peeling becomes difficult if you store with the outer shell.
- I used 6 qt instant pot and boiled 11 eggs as per family need. But you can boil up to 20 eggs in one go with the same process.
Freezing hard-boiled eggs become rubbery in texture after the thawing process. It is best to consume the same day or you can store in the fridge for up to 2-4 days.
Always peel after an ice bath and then store. Peeling becomes harder later on.
After the ice bath peeling is very easy and quick. Take a boiled egg and roll it on the kitchen surface. It will crack the shell and peel will come out just by sliding off without taking any whites with it.
Trivet comes as a default instant pot accessory. It is always best to use it. Using a trivet prevent the bouncing of the eggs while boiling. Bouncing results in cracking the eggs shell.
Always peel the boil eggs before storing. You can store peeled eggs in airtight container for 2-4 days.
For hard boiled eggs I followed 5-5-5 formula. For soft boil egg you can use 3-3-3 formula. This will result in soft white with runny and soft yolk.
This fact should be taken care of while boiling eggs on stovetop. Instant pot always results the same with eggs.
Number of egg to boil in instant pot depends on the size of instant pot as well. In 6qt IP you can place 9 eggs perfectly either at the bottom or on the trivet.
Using stackable egg stack rack you can boil up to 10-12 egg at one time.
The reason we put eggs in ice bath is to stop the further cooking process in eggs. Putting boil eggs in ice water also helps in easy peeling and also stops the discoloration of the yolk.
You do not need to increase the time if boiling more eggs. Instant pot works on pressure cooking and you can cook as many eggs as you want with the same process.
