Green Chutney For Chaat | Coriander Chutney (Hari Chutney)
Green chutney for chaat is an essential and versatile chutney of green coriander ground with garlic pods, green chili & ginger. Also known as hari chutney or coriander chutney, it is most often used in Indian cuisine, like in chaat or in Indian street food(snacks) recipes.
This green chutney is specific for chaat items like dahi vada, pani puri, sandwiches, papdi chaat, samosa chaat, and aloo tikki chaat.
Green chutney or coriander chutney is so versatile to make, you can make it either with coriander leaves or mint leaves or combination of both kind of leaves. Hari chutney is nothing but dhaniya ki chutney or coriander chutney (cilantro chutney).

What is a green chutney or hari chutney?
The main ingredient of green chutney is normally green coriander or mint or a combination of both. In this hari chutney, I am using green coriander leaves, green chilies, garlic clove, ginger & cumin seeds. A little dash of lime juice gives a tangy flavor to go with chaats.

- This green chutney for chaat is a perfect dip or sauce with Indian chaat like moong ki dal ka dahi vada, alu tikki chat, papdi chaat, ragi dhokla, besan dhokla, oats dhokla, tiranga dhokla & rava dhokla.
- This hari chutney also works great as a spread for vegetable sandwiches.
- Pair up with deep fried snacks like chana dal vada or cauliflower fritters.
- Dhaniya chutney also makes a perfect side for south Indian delights like idli & dosa.
- You can use spinach (palak) in place of coriander leaves and get palak chutney.
- Eliminate garlic from hari chutney in order to make satvik or falahari chutney for fasting like Shivratri, Navratri and many more.
How to store green chutney for chaat? Can you freeze green chutney?
Hari chutney can easily be stored for up to one week in the refrigerator. But best to use within 2-3 days for fresh and perfect taste. With time dhaniya chutney loses its flavor.
Yes, You can freeze it. Just pour it in the ice cubes trays or any container in portions. Once frozen keep the cubes in ziplock and freeze. Thaw it before using it.
Note: I have not yet frozen it as I prefer fresh to consume. Moreover, it is just a matter of 2-3 minutes to grind everything in a blender. This green chutney is very quick and easy to make.
How to make green chutney for chaat (hari chutney)?
It is very easy and quick to make green chutney for chaat and snacks. Just take every ingredient in the blender and grind till you get a smooth consistency. It takes few minutes to make this hari dhaniya ki chutney.

Ingredient 1 Cup green chutney
2 Cup tightly packed coriander leaves
1″ ginger
2-3 garlic pods
2 Green chilies (adjust as per taste)
1/2 Medium size lemon squeezed
Salt to taste
1/4 Cup water
How to make green chutney for chaat at home
- Add all ingredients in a blender jar except lemon juice.
- Grind everything till you get a smooth consistency.
- Add lemon juice and mix well. Adjust salt as per taste.
- Green chutney for chaat is ready to serve with your favorite Indian snack and chaats.
Notes
- Adjust green chilies as per taste. You can completely eliminate in order to avoid the heat.
- Replace coriander with mint to get mint chutney.
- You can also use a 1:1 ratio of green coriander and mint.
- Adding lemon juice retains the green color of coriander. Do try.
