This is another bengali recipe which I cooked recently. The aromatic flavour of lentils with spices and coconut will have your family asking for more.
Ingredients: Sufficient For Four People
1 Cup chana dal
4 Cups of water
1 Tblsp oil
1 Tblsp cumin seeds
½ Turmeric powder
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon dry mango powder/amchoor
2 Dry red chilies
2 Tblsp grated coconut
2 bay leaves
A pinch of asafoetida
3-4 Raisins/kishmish (optional)
salt as per taste
Method: Wash and soak dal for ½ an hour. Pressure cook this dal by adding salt and turmeric powder. One whistle is enough to make dal soft. Keep this aside and prepare for tempering.
Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds. Once they start spluttering add bay leaves, red chilies, and a pinch of asafoetida. saute it for a minute, and add grated coconut. Fry this for another 1-2 min and than add bolied dal. Stir it well and add sugar, dry mango powder, raisins and adjust salt as per taste. Cook this for 4-5 min on low flame. Serve hot with boiled rice and chutney.
