Originated in the Indian subcontinent, this aromatic, sweetened black tea mixed with milk has gained popularity all around the world. In India, the day always starts with adrak vali chai (ginger tea) or masala chai in the morning. I grew up seeing everyone having this masala tea at home.

There is a variety of masala chai spice mix available in the market. Adding start anise or saffron or dry rose leaves makes this tea masala unique and so flavourful.

Verdict-  Being Indian, tea is a part of my day and night. These days I am trying to avoid sugar and was looking for options to make my Indian tea flavorful and tasty enough to drink. Guys believe me with this homemade tea masala I am enjoying my sugarfree tea two times a day without any sweetner.

Chai ka masala is nothing but a combination of whole spices and herbs. To make masala chai mix we use a combination of ingredients like cardamom, black pepper, clove, star anise, dry ginger, rose petals, cinnamon, saffron, basil leaves, nutmeg, and fennel seeds.

How To Make Masala Chai Mix from scratch?

To make this tea masala just gather all ingredients in a jar and grind untill you get a coarse powder. This masala chai spice mix contains

  • Cardamom
  • Cloves
  • Cinnamon Stick
  • Black Peppercorns
  • Fennel Seeds
  • Dry Ginger Root
  • Nutmeg

How To Make Masala Chai or Indian Spiced Tea?

“Chai” simply means “Tea” in India. It is an integral part of Indian culture and has many variations to make. Though basic ingredients like milk, water, sugar and tea leaves are the same.

To make masala chai or spiced tea you just need to add 1/4Tsp spice mix per cup in the basic tea preparation. Simmer it with other ingredients, filter it and drink.

Ingredient                 1.5 Cup Tea Spice Mix

1/4 Cup green cardamom
1/4 Cup Cinnamon Stick
3 Tblsp black peppercorn
1/4 Cup cloves
2 Tblsp fennel seeds
2 Tblsp dry ginger powder
1 Nutmeg

How To Make chai ka masala or Tea Spice Mix

  1. Add all the ingredients in a jar and grind till you get a coarse powder.
  2. You can dry roast all the spices for a minute before grinding. Make sure that spices are at room temperature while grinding.
  3. Store it in an airtight container. Homemade Masala chai mix or chai ka masala is ready to use in typical Indian tea recipe.
